When JD's mom called and asked me if I wanted to join her one Saturday for the RC Cola and Moon Pie Festival my first thought was about Tommy Bettis (anyone else?). Mr. Bettis was my middle school principal and there will never be another principal like him. Take that statement however you wish. He was so funny, but intimidating. I honestly hated that man in 6th grade. That's his scheme, though. He wanted you to learn to respect him from the beginning. I'll never forget my first day of middle school. When he walked into the gym the 8th graders were "woo hoo"ing and he was high fiving them and then looked at us meek little 6th graders and ROLLED.HIS.EYES. I came home not wanted to go back to MMS. But, as time went on I realized how cool he was (even if he never gave the 6th graders the spirit stick at pep rallys). By the time I got to 8th grade we were basically running the school. He had our respect and as long as we stayed in line, he let us get away with a lot. But, the reason I think of him when I think of RC Colas and Moon Pies is because he really couldn't tolderate fighting in school. And in middle school, all the kids are walking hormones and it seemed like fights were a daily occurrence. So he'd call an assembly and he'd talk about how he'd "love" to watch a good fight and to let him know "when and where he could catch a fight off of school grounds because he loved watching a good fight while he enjoyed and RC Cola and Moon Pie". Ha! When he passed away while we were all in high school, we skipped school for the funeral. Seemed like everyone who went to that middle school did. It was such a sad day, but so amazing to see how many lives he touched during his years as principal at that school.
So, of course I went! And, no, I do not make up these festivals. Look it up! RC Cola and Moon Pie festival every year in Bell Buckle, TN. Sara invited her friend Edie to go with us. This lady was a hoot. She was a bit bummed that she left her hat at home so she made one. Out of a newspaper. And wore it. The entire time. Fabulosity ensued.

Until next year!!
